Very good thoughts, Chris. Thank you! I'm not sure, however, that I immediately see the usefulness of the distinction between a theological hope in a future Easter and God's trust in us as political moral agents. Wouldn't the former seem to imply that our political efforts cannot be trusted for attaining justice, that we will never make the crucifixion good, and that it must always be done again in an eschaton? Or is this some sort of Niebuhr-ian dialectic? I find your analysis of the first dangerous interpretation of Christ's death - the vindication of pacific withdrawal - compelling, but I'm not sure how to reconcile repudiating that version with the obvious Easter hope that the story offers us all, insomuch as the hope for future vindication seems a hallmark of pacifistic absolutism. I'd love to hear more on that.

I'm here from your post at HuPo: I'm delighted to discover your blog. The Joan Didion piece on Cheney was splendid; (I confess I haven't read NYRB regularly for more than a year: perhaps it's time to break my fast) thank you for it and, no doubt, future delights.
I am still focused, in my poor way, on the "was buried" fact of our Lord's death this Holy Saturday; I am inclined to withdraw until the 10:00 AM tomorrow at the cathedral: I have Chalice duties then.

Thanks for the nod! I hear you completely re: wanting to write all these essays for awhile and just not being able to because Real Life gets in the way. I have at least two full-length ones that have been bubbling about in my head for that long as well. :)

elayne,
thanks for keeping me honest. since i've started blogging, there have been three posts that i regret, and this is very much one of them.
it's not just that lindsay publishes on other works as well -- it's that i don't even know her personally and yet i saw fit to make a pronouncement about who she was. that was an extraordinarily irresponsible thing to do, and, as i wrote friday in my personal (handwritten) journal, one for which i'm truly apologetic.

Of course patriarchy is so entrenched that it affects both men and women. That's why it's "institutionalized sexism." :)
I still think a lot of this is much, much more nurture than nature.

I think you may be being a bit unfair to Lindsay. You may disagree with her positions about capitalism, but she posts about other subjects as well. Full disclosure: She's a personal acquaintance with whom I've socialized at various NYC blogger events.

anonymous,
if you're trying to gain traction on re-investigating the kennedy story -- about which i've known for some time and for which i've always held him in disrepute -- then you would do well not to post anonymously.
generating one mystery in an effort to resolve another isn't going to get you anywhere. --chris
